Soyabean prices in India: the season, oil and meal, and what moves prices
Where soyabean is grown and traded (Indore, Latur), how the kharif season runs, why oil and meal markets set the bean price, and the latest soyabean prices across markets.
What this guide covers
Soyabean is India's biggest oilseed crop by area, and its mandi price matters to farmers in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, to oil mills, and to poultry farms that feed soybean meal. This guide explains where soyabean is grown, how the season runs, what the bean turns into, what moves prices, and the latest prices across markets.
Where soyabean is grown and traded
Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra grow most of India's soyabean, with Rajasthan a distant third; Karnataka and Telangana grow smaller amounts. Indore is the hub of the trade: many processors are based around it, and its markets, together with yards such as Latur in Maharashtra, set the tone for prices elsewhere.
The season
Soyabean is a kharif crop. It is sown with the monsoon in June and July and harvested in September and October, so arrivals in the mandis jump in October and stay heavy for a few months. Because the crop is almost entirely rain-fed, the timing and spread of the monsoon matter a great deal: too little rain at sowing, or heavy rain at harvest, can cut yields or damage quality.
Oil and meal
Crushing plants turn the beans into soybean oil and soybean meal. By weight most of the bean becomes meal, a high-protein feed for poultry and livestock, and a smaller share becomes oil. So soyabean prices follow two markets at once: edible oil, which India imports in large quantities, and feed meal, which is sold at home and exported. Weak meal exports or cheap imported oil tend to pull the bean price down; strong demand for either pushes it up.
MSP and other measures
The central government announces a minimum support price for soyabean each kharif season. When market prices fall below it, governments can buy from farmers or compensate them for the difference under price support schemes. Changes in import duties on edible oils also move soyabean prices, because cheaper imported oil lowers what crushers can pay for beans.
What the mandi price means
Markets report the minimum, maximum and modal price per quintal; the modal price is what most of the day's soyabean sold at. Moisture, damaged or discoloured beans and foreign matter all lower the price a lot fetches.
Soybean meal and poultry feed
Soybean meal is the main protein source in Indian poultry feed, so poultry farms are among the biggest buyers of the meal made from Indian soyabean. When meal is dear, the cost of producing eggs and broiler chicken rises. Our guide to egg prices and feed costs follows maize and soyabean prices alongside egg rates.
Soyabean in Telangana and Maharashtra
In Telangana, soyabean is grown mainly in the northern districts around Adilabad, Nirmal and Nizamabad, sown with the monsoon like cotton. Across the border, Marathwada and Vidarbha in Maharashtra grow far more, and Latur's market yard is one of the busiest soyabean markets in the country.

How to read our soyabean pages
The soyabean page shows the median across India, prices by state, the lowest and highest markets and a chart over time; each market page has a 30-day table. Every price carries its date, and an old price is never shown as today's.
Common questions
Why do soyabean prices move when nothing changes in India? Soyabean is a global commodity. Prices here follow world soybean and soybean meal prices, the price of imported edible oils and the rupee's exchange rate, as well as the Indian crop.
When are soyabean prices usually lowest? Often soon after the harvest, when arrivals peak in October and November.
Is soyabean the same as soybean? Yes. Soyabean is the usual Indian spelling and the one Agmarknet uses; soybean is the international one.
